Colors fascinate me- creating an insatiable curiosity beyond imagination. As a 9-year-old, I’d accompany my mom after school to multiple clinic visits. Lasting over several months, these trips to the pediatric department had me captivated. For one, the Aquariums (my daily escapades of finding Nemo and Dory never ceased!). We can’t forget the Artsy decors and of course, the cartoon movies played on the monitors at the corner of the room.

My eyes would be hooked on the screen (that’s probably why I have glasses). Whether it was “Scooby Doo” or “SpongeBob Square Pants”, “Dora the Explorer” or “Sesame Street”, “The Bernstein Bears” or “Teletubbies,” I was drawn to the brightly colored creatures and their personalities. The list gets bigger and bigger and so does my curiosity and creativity.

The purples and the greens, the reds and the blues, the yellows and the browns – Where did these colors come from? For months it was like a “Highway Hypnosis” – I would run as fast as my legs would carry straight from oncology to pediatrics just to witness the colors in the aquarium and cartoons. I wouldn’t know how I got there but I’d never fail to miss the left or the right turn. I asked the front desk staff for some crayons and they could not turn down my curiosity. I got exactly the same colors that were in the cartoons..purple, yellow, red, and a green crayon. It was one of the happiest moments in my life. After a quick “THANK YOU”, I would go to a corner and sit with my paper and crayons. Doodle, Erase, Repeat… Hours will go like this. These were the defining moments and the beginning of my art journey. Art was a happy accident that saved and shaped my life. I am sure it will be for many.
